Headlights are one of your car’s most important safety features. Knowing when to head to the Ford dealer for new headlights can help you avoid getting stranded in the dark.

Weakening Lights

It’s very common for headlight bulbs to dim over time. This dimming is often so gradual drivers do not notice something is wrong until the lights become too dim to see clearly. Weak, dim headlights are likely near the end of their lifespan, so they should be replaced as soon as you notice something is off.

Flickering, Inconsistent Light

Flickering headlights could mean anything from a power supply issue to a bulb that’s about to go out. Steady light is important for safe driving in the dark, so if your lights flicker on and off or brighten and dim erratically, you should have them checked immediately.

One Burned Out Bulb

If one of your headlights has burned out, you should have the bulb replaced right away. Driving with only one working headlight can be dangerous. It is also illegal, meaning you’re risking a ticket. Keep in mind that bulbs that were installed at the same time will often burn out around the same time.

Foggy, Yellow Lenses

The plastic lenses that cover your headlights were originally clear. Over time, they can become foggy or yellow from oxidation. This limits the amount of light your headlights can produce. Cleaning your lenses may improve matters, but if not, they will need to be replaced.

Bulbs Keep Burning Out

If your headlight bulbs just keep burning out, there may be a larger electrical problem with your car. While it’s normal to replace your headlights from time to time, more than one set of burned-out bulbs inside a year is a red flag.

Visible Damage

If your headlights are cracked, broken, or otherwise visibly damaged, they need to be replaced. Broken headlights may produce less light, and cracks can allow water to get inside.

Moisture Inside the Lens

If you can see condensation inside the headlight lens, there are probably cracks or poor seals allowing the water in, even if you can’t see them. Since water entering your car’s electrical system can cause additional problems, moisture inside your headlights means you should get them replaced, fast.
